(Port Charlotte, FL – September 27, 2021) – Bayfront Health Port Charlotte announces that it has received certification from DNV as a Primary Plus Stroke Center, affirming the hospital’s readiness to handle a full range of stroke-related medical conditions.
“Bayfront Health Port Charlotte is committed to making our stroke care program the best it can be – and this means partnering with physicians for ongoing improvements in quality and clinical practices, and investing in the latest tools, techniques and innovations,” says Tara McCoy, CEO of Bayfront Health Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. “This certification demonstrates to our community that Bayfront Health Port Charlotte is performing at the highest level, and that we are dedicated to providing the best possible stroke care.”
DNV recognizes Bayfront Health Port Charlotte as a thrombectomy capable hospital with the technology and expertise necessary to perform minimally invasive Endovascular Thrombectomy (EVT), which is an advanced surgical procedure that removes life-threatening blood clots from arteries of the brain. The hospital also has neurointensive and critical care coverage.
“This certification is an example of our commitment to personnel, training and equipment needed to quickly assess and treat strokes,” says Dr. Amy Mellor, Medical Director of the Bayfront Health Port Charlotte stroke program.
The DNV Primary Plus Stroke Center Certification is based on standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association, and affirms that Bayfront Health Port Charlotte addresses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes.
“Achieving this certification validates all the effort we have put into this program and to ensure the health and safety of our patients,” says Dr. Nasser Razack, neurointerventional radiologist for the Bayfront Health Port Charlotte stroke program.
Stroke is one of the nation’s leading causes of death and is also a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States. Because stroke or “brain attack” affects blood flow to the brain, rapid and effective treatment can save lives and provide the best chance of limiting the extent of long-term damage.
The Bayfront Health Port Charlotte stroke treatment program’s goal is to provide the best care to every stroke patient. The program includes a multidisciplinary team of physicians from emergency medicine, neurology, neurosurgery and interventional radiology, as well as nursing, rehabilitation services, pharmacy, radiology, and social work.
