Shorepoint Health Punta Gorda Offers New Robotic Surgery Technology

Punta Gorda, FL — ShorePoint Health Punta Gorda is making the investment to take minimally invasive technology to the next level with the addition of new robotic technologies. The integration of robotics and minimally invasive techniques will allow surgeons to perform more complex procedures while offering many potential benefits to patients.
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has revolutionized many surgical procedures that formerly involved significant downtime and recovery. The MIS approach has become popular for physicians and patients alike because it potentially offers less pain and scarring, shorter hospital stays and fewer complications – getting you back on your feet and back to the things you enjoy, more quickly.
The use of robotic-assisted technology virtually extends the surgeon’s eyes and hands. Using the system, the surgeon operates while seated at a console viewing a 3-D image of the surgical area. The system mimics the surgeon’s hand movements in real time, at a smaller scale, allowing for more precision during surgery. The robot doesn’t replace the surgeon, but provides sharper detail and a 360-degree view of the surgery site, as well as greater dexterity in navigating complex anatomical structures.
“Robotic-assisted surgery gives the surgeon a better view of the operative field, with improved clarity and detail, allowing for a more precise technique when performing surgery in delicate or hard-to-reach areas,” explains Vincent Brown, M.D.*, a board-certified general surgeon. “In our experience, this can mean an operation that results in reduced complications for the patient, as well as shorter hospital stay and recovery time." Dr. Brown was the first to leverage the robotic system in a general surgery procedure at ShorePoint Health Punta Gorda in early December.
This technology will be utilized in bariatric weight loss surgeries along with routine general surgeries to include hernia repair, gallbladder resections, and colon resections to name a few. Already, multiple cases have been scheduled through the remainder of 2022.
“We are pleased to enhance our surgical capabilities for patients and surgeons. Robotic-assisted technology allows us to expand our procedure offerings in Punta Gorda, providing a greater level of care for our community.” said Justin Bryant, interim chief administrative officer for ShorePoint Health Punta Gorda.
Look for an opportunity to see the robot in person around Punta Gorda in early 2023.
