Southwest Florida Heart Center Welcomes Cardiothoracic Surgeon
11/27/2016
Port Charlotte, FL (November 28, 2016) – The Southwest Florida Heart Center, located on the campus of Bayfront Health Port Charlotte, and Bayfront Health Medical Group welcome the addition of Gonzalo Carrizo, M.D., board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in cardiac, thoracic, vascular and endovascular surgical procedures.
Carrizo was first exposed to the medical field by his father, a physician. He graduated with honors from the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba Medical School in Argentina at the age of 22. Soon after, he met Denton Cooley, M.D., founder and surgeon-in-chief of The Texas Heart Institute, famous for performing the first implantation of a total artificial heart and other pioneering techniques. Following the sudden death of his uncle due to a ruptured aortic aneurysm, he made the decision to follow his passion to pursue a career in cardiovascular surgery.
Carrizo completed residencies in general surgery, vascular-endovascular surgery and cardiothoracic surgery. He acquired an extensive experience in the fields of cardiac, thoracic, vascular and endovascular surgery, mechanical assist devices, heart and lung transplantation when he worked at the Texas Heart Institute, University of Florida-Gainesville and the University of Miami. He has a personal interest in advanced and complex cardiac, aortic and aneurysmal pathologies. Carrizo was invited to present various heart and aneurysm related topics at national and international symposiums and meetings. Since August 2013 he resides full time in Charlotte County.
“I am committed to serving this community with the most current techniques and technology, including minimally invasive options,” Carrizo says. “I treat my patients with comprehensive, precise and personalized care. I wouldn’t do it any other way.”
Carrizo’s commitments extend beyond the office and Heart Center. He volunteers as a cardiovascular surgeon at the Virginia B. Andes Clinic for the uninsured. He is also actively involved in community outreach, patient education, and health events. He presents many lectures in the community and educates the Charlotte County Fire and EMS department. And when he finds some free time, he trains and competes in triathlons across the state.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Carrizo to our medical staff and Bayfront Health Medical Group,” says Tim Cerullo, Market CEO of Bayfront Health Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. “He is committed to our patients and the residents of our community.”
Carrizo is currently seeing patients at 2380 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. To schedule an appointment, call 941-206-0325. Same day appointments are often available. For more information, visit BayfrontHealthMedGroup.com.
