Cardiac Surgery
When open-heart surgery offers the best treatment solution, ShorePoint Health Port Charlotte brings together clinical and surgical specialists to care for patients at the ShorePoint Heart Center. Our providers employ a collaborative approach, reviewing each case as a team to improve care and enhance outcomes. Our providers deliver a range of surgical care, including:
The Beating Heart Approach for Improved Recovery
Sometimes, heart surgery is performed with the assistance of a heart-lung machine, which maintains life while allowing the heart’s beating to be stopped. However, at the ShorePoint Heart Center, our providers perform a large number of procedures off-pump, also known as “beating heart” surgery. This means that the heart-lung machine is not used, and the heart never stops beating. This can greatly lower the risk of death, stroke, renal failure and the post-operative length of stay in the hospital.
Bypass Surgery
Bypass surgery is done in response to heart failure due to an artery in the heart being blocked, obstructing blood flow. Blood is redirected so the flow to and from the heart improves. While it is not a cure to cardiovascular disease or coronary artery disease, it does help make the symptoms more bearable, such as trouble breathing or chest pain, and improve both quality of life and heart function.
Coronary artery bypass surgery is not an immediate fix, but it can be done as an emergency response to an event such as a heart attack. Changing your lifestyle to include more heart-healthy habits and medication can help reduce the risk of excessive clotting and other heart issues.
